This cultural experience starts at the Visitor Center at 6,600 feet elevation. Walking tours begin in the upper parking lot at 7,400 feet elevation. Guided walking tours end at the Great House Pueblo at 7,600 feet elevation. Tours do not climb Chimney Rock nor Companion Rock.
Flanked by towering Ponderosa pines, the Visitor Center is 1/2 mile from the entrance gate at Highway 151. In season (May 15 to September 30), the Visitor Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. You will be welcomed by a volunteer cabin host who will provide site and tour information.
Features at the Visitor Center include:
- a Pit House model and artifact display
- a selection of books, gifts, and souvenirs
- necessities such as sunscreen, insect repellent, and bottled water (there is no water at the site)
- picnic tables
- restrooms (There also are restrooms at the upper parking lot where the walking tours begin.)
| Reservations are not required for regular daily guided tours except for groups of ten or more. Special and private tours by reservation only. To arrange a tour for a large group, please call the business office at 970-731-7133.

- None of the ancient structures are visible from the parking lot.
- Tours may be cancelled during special events or due to threatening weather - lightning safety article.
- Public access to the Pueblo Trail is seasonally restricted beyond the falcon enclosure fence.
During this seasonal closure (March 1 - September 30), only guided tours operated by the Chimney Rock Interpretive Association may use the trail, under authority of the USDA Forest Service special use permit.
