The Life at Chimney Rock Festival offers a glimpse into life as it existed in Ancestral Puebloan times. Watch a volunteer spin dog hair into yarn using a drop spindle. Make a small pot using the coil method. Enjoy flute music and learn how this Native American hand carves his flutes and creates his own songs.
Visitors can try their hand at throwing the atlatl, an ancient spear throwing device, grinding corn using a mano and metate, or pound yucca to release the fibers which were used to make rope, netting, or even sandals. You may carve a petroglyph or paint a pictograph. Native American arts and crafts are available for purchase.
There is no entrance fee and reservations are not necessary for this family-oriented festival which takes place around the Chimney Rock Visitor Center. Tours of the site are available at regular prices. If you want to arrange a free tour for your school group, you must make an advance reservation.
