TOUR GUIDES lead guided interpretive tours of Chimney Rock's developed trails for visitors. Some tour guides lead two tours per day, one day a week; some do one tour per day one day a week. Other tour guides substitute when available. There are a few who work two days a week. Everyone is a hero for donating whatever time they have to give.
Tour guides are responsible for providing an accurate interpretation of the area's archaeology, natural history, ethnology, and history. Because tours are not scripted, it's desirable to shadow several different tour guides as you customize your tour based on the core curriculum. Tour guides stress visitor safety and personal safety at all times to prevent accidents or illness.
SITE MONITOR volunteers wish to share the story of Chimney Rock without climbing the Pueblo trail. Their primary responsibility is to answer questions and direct self-guided tour guests to the Great Kiva Trail. Monitors should be familiar with the area's archaeology, natural history, ethnology, and history.
VISITOR CENTER HOST typically work in pairs. Still, trainees should plan to work alongside one or two seasoned hosts before being scheduled. The Host's day is spent welcoming visitors, describing tour options and special events and programs and taking reservations for those events, answering questions, and answering the telephone. Hosts need to be familiar with tour details and all special programs and events. It's also useful to be familiar with the archaeological exhibits and educational items for sale in the Visitor Center. Often, hosts provide information on area resources for visitors.
